In the Middle Ages, legend circulates that the abbey was founded in the 7th century. There are two versions of this founding legend. According to one, the abbey was built by one Basinus, king of Basotes, the other legend shows the abbey going back to St. Amandus of Ghent. At that time, he founded the Sint-Baafs- and Sint-Pietersabdij in Ghent. The first clergy were secular canons (choirmasters). The Normans destroyed the abbey, but under Baldwin II the Bald, Count of Flanders and Lord of Drongen, it was refounded.
