Eva - Dodeigne
Knokke
Eugène Dodeigne (Belgium, 1923)
Installed: 1974
Purchased: 1974
Location: Canadasquare, Albertstrand
About the artist
Sculptor, draftsman. Received training from his father, a French stonecutter. Settled in France and studied in Tourcoing and Paris. He finds his inspiration in the human figure, which appears to be roughly hewn from stone and thus radiates monumentality and strength, but also a certain vulnerability; monumental, static, and massive forms in vertical expansion that resemble menhirs. Since the mid-1990s, he has focused on drawing, particularly dancers.
About the sculpture
The work Eva, made of Burgundy stone, was placed in front of the Casino as a memorial to Gustave Nellens (1907-1971), casino operator and promoter of Knokke.
