Damme is of course also known as the city of Tijl Uilenspiegel, famous from the book by Charles de Coster, in which Tijl stands up against the Spanish rulers in the 16th century together with his friend Lamme Goedzak.
The Flemish medieval writer Jacob van Maerlant also lived in Damme. And the city has even more to do with books: every 2nd Sunday of the month there is a real book market. And in the old city center, there are several second-hand bookstores located. Therefore, Damme rightly deserves the title of Flemish book city.
