Damme

The town originated as a transshipment port on the connection between Bruges and the North Sea. Also due to its connection with Bruges and via Het Zwin to the North Sea, Damme experienced its greatest prosperity at the end of the 13th century. Several large and small wars were fought here to conquer this strategic location. Around 1400, a rampart was built, which was further expanded into a real fortified town with a star-shaped rampart in the early 17th century. The town hall dates back to 1467 and was used in 1468 for the marriage of Charles the Bold and Margaretha of York. In 1249, the guest house was established, providing shelter for travelers and pilgrims.
