In 1907, following a huge international conference, Henri La Fontaine and Otlet created the Central Office of International Associations, which was renamed to the Union of International Associations in 1910, and which is still located here in Brussels.
The goals of the UIA are to promote and facilitate the activities of the world-wide network of nonprofit organizations in every field of human activity or belief, whether scientific, religious, artistic, educational, trade or labour.
