Every year, Ledeberg, a district of Ghent, holds its onion market in August near the Keizerspoort. This onion market is linked to a historical legend.
Emperor Joseph II is said to have once stood before the closed city gate, the Keizerpoort. He found shelter with an innkeeper who served him dinner. In gratitude, Emperor Joseph II granted permission to hold an onion market annually.
