The region around Affligem had an excellent reputation at the time for hop cultivation. “Hop merchants from England to the Baltic States bought the hops. In 1654, the Affligem Abbey already had 6,500 hop pits. A century later, there were two brewing kettles, each with a capacity of about forty beer barrels.”
