Oignies is still called ' le village des veuves ' or ' the village of the widows ' in the region. Slate was mined here. And that was hard and dangerous work. Much more dangerous than working in the coal mines. The ardoisier or worker who mined slate had an even greater chance of a lung disease because of the stone dust. The average life expectancy of the ardoisier before the Second World War was about 55 years. And that was the lowest in this village.
