The name Beverlo was first mentioned in 1186. The name means: "Forest with beavers located on sandy soil".
Originally, Beverlo was a settlement of Salian Franks. It became part of the Land of Ham. Historic Beverlo also included Heppen and the heath between Heppen and Hechtel. Between 900 and 1100, Beverlo became a separate parish.
