Malmedy is, along with Eupen and Sankt Vith, one of the most important towns in the German-speaking part of the province of Liège, known as the East Cantons. In Malmedy, however, there is a French-speaking majority, with a protected German-speaking minority. The attractive town, including its districts, has about 10,500 inhabitants and is located at the confluence of two beautiful streams, namely the Warche and the Warchenne. The latter - literally the Little Warche - is very interesting from a landscape perspective and well worth a closer acquaintance. In this former abbey town, the focal point is the 18th-century cathedral - the former abbey church - with its two green towers. At the confluence of the Warche and Warchenne stands the Chapelle des Malades or Krankenkapelle, a place of worship originating from 1188; the current appearance dates from 1768; the interior walls are almost entirely covered with gratitude tiles. The National Paper Museum and the Carnival Museum, housed in the impressive Maison Cavens, a former orphanage, are worth a visit. In February, 'Li Cwarmè' is celebrated in Malmedy, a wild carnival celebration known beyond the borders.
