Over the centuries, Sint-Margriete has been repeatedly ravaged by floods. Witness to this is the parish church: in 1375 the first church was swallowed up by the waves, the current one is already the fifth since then. The name of the village refers to Saint Margaret, daughter of a prominent pagan, who was persecuted, tortured and then beheaded by her father at the age of 15.
