On the first Monday of March is the annual market in Geraardsbergen. There the end of winter is celebrated with the pretzel throw and the barrel fire. Pretzels are ring-shaped buns. One of the pretzels contains a gold piece of jewelry. The sandwiches are thrown into the crowd. At the end of the feast, a wooden barrel is set on fire that symbolizes the beginning of spring. The authorities are also served wine with live fish, but that use is controversial. The use of the tonnekensbrand has been proposed to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
