In Wambeek you will find a lot of links to Pol De Mont. For example, the streets around the church are named after him and there is also a Pol De Mont hiking trail. Pol De Mont or Charles Polydore de Mont was a Flemish writer and poet who was born in Wambeek. Together with Albrecht Rodenbach, he founded Het Pennoen. In 1880 his collection of poems, which won the Quinquennial State Prize for Flemish Literature, was published. In 1904 he was appointed curator of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. A year later he was one of the founders of the magazine De Vlaamse Gids. In 1919 he resigned as curator after being accused of activism in the press. He became editor-in-chief of the pro-Flemish newspaper De Schelde. Some of his collaborators there were Paul van Ostaijen and Alice Nahon.
