The current municipality of Zwijndrecht was created on January 1, 1977, through the merger of the core municipality of Zwijndrecht with the then-abolished municipality of Burcht. Zwijndrecht and Burcht have been part of the province of Antwerp only since March 31, 1923. Before that, the Scheldt was the border, and both former municipalities belonged to the province of East Flanders. In the same year, the former Borgerweertpolder and the Saint Anne parish on the Flemish Head (Saint Anneke) of Zwijndrecht were also detached and the whole was added to the city of Antwerp under the name Linkeroever.
