The current municipality of Zwijndrecht was established on January 1, 1977, through the merger of the core municipality of Zwijndrecht with the then-disbanded municipality of Burcht. Zwijndrecht and Burcht have only been part of the province of Antwerp since March 31, 1923. Before that, the Scheldt was the border, and both former municipalities belonged to the province of East Flanders. In the same year, the former Borgerweertpolder and the Sint-Annaparochie on the Flemish Head (Sint-Anneke) of Zwijndrecht were also detached and the whole was incorporated under the name Left Bank (Linkeroever) into the city of Antwerp.
