Schoorbakkehoeve

Description

Schorestraat no. 61. Also known as "SCHOORBAKKEHOEVE" cf. name plate, a designation referring to the nearby bridge of the same name over the IJzer; formerly "KNUYDTWALLE". Abbey farm granted in 1176 by Philip of Alsace, Count of Flanders, to the St. Nicholas Abbey of Veurne; declared forfeit during the French period and sold in 1798. After the destruction during World War I, rebuilt by architect J. Heyneman (Outrijve) mostly according to the plans of T. Raison (Bruges). Since 1971 and 1979 respectively adapted for farm tourism and as a restaurant-event hall. Imposing farm located between IJzer and Vladslovaart, with a bend to the east of the farm buildings. Originally a high-quality post-war farm style surpassing the average post-war farms and connecting with the plans as indicated in "Fermes types & constructions rurales en West Flandre" by A. Ronse and T. Raison; thorough alterations due to the new purpose. Historicizing reconstruction cf. arrangement: U-shaped closed arrangement of the components around a grazed yard accessible via a northwest yard access; farmhouse, stable wings inter alia with adjacent pigeon house, and barn respectively, to the northwest, southwest and north, and east; plantations: surrounding meadow fenced with poplars; materials; tiled gable roofs; whitewashed brick construction above a plinth; regional building elements: (side) gable walls inter alia for risalite at the farmhouse; buttresses; rectangular wall openings recessed in basket-arch surrounds; owl and vent holes; brick gate pillars with pyramid-shaped top piece marking the estate access.
