Description

Recorded in 1719 as "die Schoone Lieve Vrauwe", now known as "KLEIN TAFEL ROND" (see inscription above the facade). Corner building in traditional brick and sandstone style, constructed in the 17th century by the chapter of the Saint Peter's Church (see street introduction). Two out of four bays and two building levels - formerly two levels + mezzanine - under a steep gable roof (ridge parallel to the square), with the side wall designed as a broad stepped gable (12 steps + pinnacle). Its current lower order with wide round-arched openings under surrounding architraves dates from 1885, replacing the former low ground floor and mezzanine. In 1940, brewery Artois received permission to restore the facades according to the design by architect P. Stevens: the building was stripped of its later-applied cement layer and classical window surrounds, the brick and sandstone masonry was restored and partially replaced by related reclaimed stone. Characteristic of the style is the construction including, among other things, stringcourses and cross windows in corner and block frames under double relieving arches, the boundary corner chain with (later integrated?) niche on a profiled plinth. Furthermore, on the market side, the delineation by scaffolding holes and articulated eaves and crowned by a stepped roof window with shoulder pieces, a slanting pinnacle, and a bulb ornament, and in the high stepped side gable top the arrangement with, in the same frame, a round-arched central window between bulb frames under double relieving arches and higher up a rectangular and square shutter window under a beam opening. On this side, the ground floor is half hidden behind the south portal of the Saint Peter's Church.
