Mayer van den Bergh Museum

When you step into the Mayer van den Bergh museum, you enter the sixteenth century, in the opulently decorated home of a wealthy patrician with expensive taste. It is merely an illusion. The 16th-century building dates back to 1904. It is a monument in honor of a deceased son, erected by a grieving mother. The son is Fritz Mayer, the mother is Henriëtte van den Bergh. Fritz fell from his horse, and three days later he was dead. He was 43. Fritz was an art connoisseur and collector. His rediscovery of the Dulle Griet earned him a place in art history. His art collection contained dozens of treasures that are now included in the Flemish Top Pieces List. After his untimely death, Henriëtte had the museum built in just three years to house Fritz's collection.
