The rectory of the then-priest Meulepas on Markgravelei played a role in the theft of The Just Judges. On June 14, 1934, the priest was to hand over the ransom (1,000,000 Belgian Francs). He only gave 25,000 francs. The panel would never be recovered. The priest was the pastor of the nearby Saint Lawrence Church. Arséne Goedertier knew this rectory well because his older brother, a judge, lived in this street until his death.
This passage from the ransom letter clearly describes what he had to do:
"It is simply a matter of going to take a small package from Monsieur the Rev. Curé of the church 'Saint-Laurent, Avenue Markgrave 95 in Antwerp, and transmitting it, without revealing yourself, to the Rev. Curé of the church of Finistère in Brussels. In Antwerp, no one will ask you for your address, it will be enough to present the enclosed envelope to him. You serve therefore as a 'runner' for the transmission."
