Church of Our Lady of Dendermonde

In the 11th century a Romanesque church was built by order of Ringoot II, lord of Dendermonde. The prosperous 13th century caused a large population increase. The old church was expanded from the 14th century and transformed into a sanctuary in Scheldt Gothic (7) with the shape of a Latin cross. The 15th century was dominated by various renovation and expansion campaigns.
It was during this period, namely in 1468, that the church received the high visit of Margaret of York, the third wife of the Burgundian Duke Charles the Bold.
The Gothic church preserves some valuable art treasures such as paintings by a.o. Antoon van Dijck and Gaspard de Craeyer.

Scheldt Gothic (7)
This is an early Gothic architectural style that originated at the end of the 12th century in Tournai. Characteristic is the combination of Romanesque elements, such as a tower at the intersection of the church, and Gothic elements, pointed arches and verticality as well as the use of Tournai (blue) limestone. The architectural style spread from Tournai, where the stone was quarried, along the Scheldt.
