In front of the Church of Our Lady of Dendermonde is the statue of Father Pieter Jan De Smet or Petrus Joannes De Smet. Father De Smet first went to study in the US. He returned to Belgium but returned to Missouri in 1837 and began his missionary work with the Indians. He regularly returned to Europe to collect money for his redskins. The U.S. government recognized his great influence on the Indians and charged him with several peacekeeping missions. Father De Smet died in St. Louis on the night of May 22-23, 1873.
