The Kemmelberg is the highest mountain in West Flanders (156 m) and is featured in many cycling races. This hill is often decisive and is the arbiter in Gent-Wevelgem, the Three Days of West Flanders for example.
There are 3 different routes to climb the Kemmelberg: from the west, the south, and the east. There are cobblestones on Kemmelberg-West and Kemmelberg-East.
The slope is steep: 23% maximum, and the average is around 4% (except for the south side (8%)).
The fast descent on the cobblestones sometimes causes falls, which is why the west side was removed during Gent-Wevelgem.
According to a study, the Kemmelberg is even tougher than the Muur (see article)!
East Kemmelberg: 4% average, 13% max (over a length of 100 m), 18% maximum (over a length of 5 m), 119 m elevation, length: 3000 m, cotacol score: 152
West Kemmelberg: 4.4% average, 19% max (over a length of 100 m), 23% max (over a length of 5 m), 109 m elevation, length: 2500 m, cotacol score: 183
South Kemmelberg: 7.8 average, 15% max (over a length of 100 m), 17% max (over a length of 5 m), 109 m elevation, length: 1400 m, cotacol score: 147
