The Sint-Anna tunnel is a pedestrian and cyclist tunnel beneath the Scheldt River in the Belgian city of Antwerp. Construction of the Sint-Anna tunnel began in 1931 and the tunnel was opened in 1933.
This 572-meter-long tunnel, located 31.57 meters below ground, is also referred to by the people of Antwerp as the Pedestrian Tunnel and has connected the city with the Left Bank since 1933, in other words, the older part of Antwerp with the newer part. Both sides have a lift for 40 people or a maximum of 3,000 kg, and two sets of two authentic wooden escalators. These escalators were a real novelty for that time. The outer diameter of the tunnel measures 4.74 m, while the inner diameter is 4.30 m. The two entrance buildings were designed by Emiel Van Averbeke.
