Sint-Gillis-Waas, with the districts of De Klinge, Meerdonk, and Sint-Pauwels, is located in the northeast of Waasland and borders the Dutch border. This border area was once the playground of smugglers who tried to outsmart customs in all sorts of sly ways. If you follow the Tweelandenroute, you are constantly flirting with the border; even the border markers do not always make it clear whether you are in Flanders or the Netherlands. Just like Moerbeke, Sint-Gillis-Waas boasts a beautiful creek landscape around the Grote Geul and the Sint-Jacobsgat, along with the many fruit orchards and the Stropersbos, providing a diverse nature experience.
Culturally, Sint-Gillis-Waas also holds its own. Every five years, the municipality hosts Drieskes Kerremes, an international folklore festival named after the miracle doctor 'Drieske Nijpers'. The municipality is home to the House of Evolution, one of the largest private museums in Belgium, as well as the local history museums Oud-Vredegerecht and Oud-Gemeentehuis, which feature an extensive photo collection.
