Today, the river Zuidlede forms a connection between the Durme in Daknam, Lokeren and the Moervaart in Mendonk. It meanders mainly through agricultural land and to a large extent through the provincial domain of Puyenbroeck. Over its entire length, about 15 kilometers, it is inaccessible to motor vessels, but it is a gem for a boat trip by canoe or kayak, although you have to carry your boat over a dam a few times. In the past, the Zuidlede was the natural middle course of the Durme, but due to the excavation and canalization of the Moervaart, this canal slowly took over its task.
