During the war, heavy fighting took place in the area of Hooge, which, due to its elevation, had a strategically interesting position for both parties. During these actions, mine loads were also placed under enemy positions, which were then detonated at a specific time. The largest was undoubtedly the 'Hooge Crater' of July 19, 1915, which was created by the British under the German positions. This 'Hooge Crater' had a diameter of 40m and a depth of 6m. The crater wall consisted of 5m high raised earth and was a coveted shelter by both camps, offering many possibilities. The crater was filled in during the 1920s.
