Due to its strategic location as an important traffic junction of the Allied-occupied hinterland, although the city itself was outside the front line, Ypres became the target of large-scale German attacks during World War I, known as the First (1914), Second (1915), and Third Battle of Ypres (1917), and finally the Battle of Kemmel (1918). At the level of Ypres, the north-south front line indeed formed a partially encircling eastern curve around the city, the so-called Ypres Salient, together with the Yser, the core of the trench warfare, which was initiated after the failure of the German offensive on a front line that hardly changed until 1917.
