Keiem was under water for almost the entire war. There was fighting here in October 1914, but the Germans quickly captured the village.
This cemetery was made after the war by amalgamating a number of smaller cemeteries in the area. It was only possible to identify 225 of the 600 soldiers buried here. Many of them died during the attack at Tervate bridge on 22 October 2014.
The most famous casualty buried at Keiem is Armand Glibert, a pilot who was shot down over Koekelare on Easter Sunday, 8 April 1917, together with his observer Jules Callant. They had just dropped bombs on the German airfield at Gistel, but on the return flight they were surprised by a larger group of German planes.
Glibert is buried in grave 494.
