Keiem stand den ganzen Krieg über fast vollständig unter Wasser. Im Oktober 1914 wurde rund um das Dorf gekämpft, es fiel dann aber ziemlich schnell in deutsche Hände.
Dieser Friedhof entstand nach dem Krieg durch die Zusammenlegung mehrerer kleinerer Friedhöfe. Von 225 der 600 Gräber ist bekannt, wer dort beigesetzt wurde. Viele der hier beerdigten Soldaten fielen in der Schlacht um die Tervatebrücke am 22. Oktober 1914.
Das bekannteste Kriegsopfer in Keiem ist Armand Glibert, ein Pilot, der am Ostersonntag, den 8. April 1917, zusammen mit seinem Beobachter Jules Callant über Koekelaere abgeschossen wurde. Die beiden hatten Bomben auf den deutschen Flugplatz in Gistel geworfen und wurden bei der Rückkehr vor einer deutschen Maschine erwischt.
