Keiem staat gedurende de hele oorlog vrijwel volledig onder water. Er wordt rondom het dorp gevochten in oktober, maar het valt vrij snel in handen van de Duitsers.
Deze begraafplaats werd na de oorlog samengesteld uit verschillende kleinere begraafplaatsen. Van 225 van de 600 graven weten we wie er in begraven ligt. Veel van hen sneuvelden in de slag van 22 oktober 1914 om de Tervatebrug.
Het bekendste slachtoffer van de oorlog in Keiem is Armand Glibert, een piloot die op paaszondag 8 april 1917 boven Koekelare werd neergeschoten samen met zijn observator Jules Callant. Ze hadden bommen gedropt op het Duitse vliegveld in Gistel, maar werden neergehaald door een Duitse overmacht bij het terugkeren.
