According to Winkler-Prins, the green movement in Flanders, the first in Europe, originated here in the Brewery in Viersel. Under the title "Living in the Brewery," Jesuit Father Luc Versteylen established a Christian community around the end of the 1960s where people seek insight and inspiration to this day. They found shelter in this old brewery De Valk in Viersel, near the Albert Canal. Here they founded the Green Cyclists, an activist group that campaigned against the planned construction of a push boat canal from the Port of Antwerp to the Albert Canal, among other things. This is how they came into contact with other green activists. The revival movement "Living Differently" also emerged here, promoting new values in contrast to the busy, frantic times: simplicity, togetherness, and silence were presented as alternatives to consumption, competition, and performance. In 1977, they participated in elections for the first time as Agalev (see principles of Agalev).
