This alternative climb of the Côte de Wanne is unofficially called Côte de Spineux, but is recognized during events like Liège-Bastogne-Liège as the Côte de Wanne. This variant is considerably easier, but does not have a short descent. You climb straight up in one go. Quite nice.
On the N68 (a busy road with a lot of fast-moving traffic) between Grand-Halleux and Trois-Ponts, you take the exit towards Wanne. On your way to the small village of Spineux, the road quickly averages 7%. For about a kilometer, you get to enjoy a reasonably constant, but pleasantly flowing gradient. In the village, you weave past a few beautiful old houses.
After the village, the road becomes noticeably easier. For almost a kilometer, we navigate under easy conditions to the final section of the climb. To your right, you have a beautiful view of the hilly landscape. The steep section of the Côte de Wanne connects here on the right at the end. Through the forest follows the last challenging part. Take the first left turn towards Wanne. After about 500 meters, you reach the top.
