On the Schoenmarkt we see the Schepenhuis, the oldest town hall of Mechelen. The lowest part on the market side is the original Schepenhuis from the 13th century. A larger section was added against it in 1374-1375. The younger part is built in Brabantine Gothic style. The heavy walls and the crenellated walkway still relate to the construction method of the early medieval 'stones', which had a strong defensive character.
