Halles America

Description

This building was realized between 1921 and 1926 by Jacques Obozinski and Fernand Petit, commissioned by America et Cie. The building was protected as a monument in 1993.

The Halles America refer to the harbor function of the neighborhood, linked to the canal. At the location of the current Diksmuide and Laperlaans, there were the Trade Dock and the customs warehouse.
In 1910-11, Brussels-Seaport was built outside the city. The dock and the storage house disappeared, and the city approved a new urbanization plan. Starting in the 1920s, many wholesalers in fruits and vegetables, both domestic and imported, settled in this neighborhood. The company America et Cie was one of them. They built a fruit auction where the shopkeepers of the agglomeration came to stock up. This initiative was part of the economic recovery after World War I. Many other developments from the 1920s in the area bear witness to this.

The mixed function of the building (residential/commercial/warehouse) is characteristic of the neighborhood. The significance of the residential function in a commercial area indicated the desire to maximize the available space in the city. Like most buildings in the area, it is still used for both functions.
