The Palace of Fine Arts was designed in 1928 by the famous architect Victor Horta. His commission came with many restrictions: the palace had to be built on a site at the Kunstberg with significant height differences between the high and low parts of Brussels. Furthermore, the height of the highest façade on the Koningsstraat could not obstruct the view from the Royal Palace of Brussels. The result is a building with eight different levels, massive yet invisible due to the many underground spaces. For the Palace of Fine Arts, Horta exchanged the curvilinear lines of Art Nouveau for the geometric forms of Art Deco. In his Memoirs, Horta refers to the Palace as a highlight of his career.
