Villa Empain was designed by the Swiss architect Polak on behalf of the businessman and patron Louis Empain (1908 - 1976). It is a masterpiece of Art Deco. The young Baron Empain lived in the house for only a short time. In 1937, he donated the villa to the Belgian state, intending to turn it into a museum of decorative arts. The Villa Empain was requisitioned by the Gestapo in 1943 and had various purposes and inhabitants after the war, such as the Russian embassy and Radio-Télévision-Luxembourg. In 1990, it was taken out of service and neglected. Only since 2007 has the villa been a protected monument and a center for cultural and artistic dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures. Regular exhibitions are held.
The Villa Empain is open every day from 10 am to 6:30 pm, closed on Mondays.
