As we pedal into Zingem, we catch sight of a beautiful little piece of nature to the left. The Weiput is a nature reserve of 7 hectares. It mainly consists of a pond, surrounded by a border of reeds, which continues into a wet tangle of willows. Once, the pond was a clay and sand pit, which was later partially overrun by the alluvium of the Scheldt. After that, nature was able to quietly take its course.
The aquatic plants that have grown in this pond have made the Weiput a paradise for waterfowl. The thick border of reeds provides an ideal biotope for the songbirds such as the sedge warbler, the reed bunting, and the common reed.
