Wijtschate is a village in the Belgian province of West Flanders and a part of the municipality of Heuvelland. The village is known for the restored location Bayernwald, which keeps the memory of World War I alive.
Wijtschate is located on a ridge that forms the watershed between the Yser and Scheldt basins. The highest point is 84 meters. Wijtschate has a ridge and several small hills. From Wijtschate, there is a panoramic view of the city of Ypres and its hinterland, which is why the Germans attached so much importance to possessing Wijtschate: they were in an ideal position to observe the British.
