The church was built on the ruins of the old abbey church and was the first modern church in Belgium. Architect Huib Hoste who was charged with the reconstruction of the area after World War I demonstrated his new ideas on modern architecture. The main materials are brick and reinforced concrete.Typical are the wide nave and the round arches in the windows between the pillars.
The bronze Calvary group above the altar and the statues of the 12 aposles are the work of artist Jules Fonteyne of Bruges, who designed the stained glass windows together with architect Hoste.
