Paul Gees says about his sculpture "Referring to the war, this image can be read as a subdued conflict, a defiance, but also an awareness of the permanent risk, the precariousness as a charged silence. The image also positions the vertical above the horizontal, as the aspiration for the spiritual over the material. After all, it is often from the latter that a reason for conflict arises, on whatever scale."
