The castle of Gruuthuse was already mentioned in the Middle Ages and has had an eventful past. The castle bears the name of its most famous inhabitant. In the 15th century, this estate was the country estate of Louis of Gruuthuse, counsellor and diplomat to the Dukes of Burgundy. The restored entrance gate is a remnant of this fortress and is clearly visible from the Stationsstraat. Since the 17th century, Gruuthuse has been inseparable from the d'Ursel family. The current building in neo-Flemish style dates from 1890 and was designed by master builder René Buyck, who also drew the plans for the Oostkamp town hall. It was Count Charles d'Ursel who had the current castle built and the park redesigned, according to the plans of landscape architect Duchesne. The castle park is only accessible to groups! Reservations are required.
