The Viconia clay pits in Stuivekenskerke are mainly known for their great bird diversity. The 7 very different ponds and the newly excavated area, the wet and relief-rich hay meadows, the hedges, and the marshy little forest create a large variety of habitats in a relatively small area. Moreover, the nature reserve is favorably located along the IJzer and between water-rich areas such as the IJzer estuary, the Handzame valley, and the IJzerbroeken. To date, a total of 195 bird species have been observed in the nature reserve, including many waterfowl and waders, reed warblers, and bearded tits.
