This area was already mentioned in the 13th century and belonged to the wild lands that stretched between Bruges and Maldegem. The Beverhoutsveld was a "common meadow" until the 19th century. The local residents as a group were the owners of the field and let their cattle graze there. It was only in the second half of the 19th century that the area was cultivated. This is when the hedged landscape emerged, which has been preserved to this day. The Beverhoutsveld is now municipal property and has remained free from residential development. Due to the absence of farms and houses, the field is a pronounced quiet area. Nature and agriculture intertwine here: a number of plots of wet pasture are no longer fertilized and are mowed annually, allowing colorful field flowers such as cuckoo flower and evening primrose to reappear. In the Beverhoutsveld, you can also observe various farmland birds such as the lapwing, the kestrel, and the partridge. Hares and foxes also feel at home there. The barn owls and redstarts nest in the hedge willows.
