The nature area Ruidenberg was purchased in 1998 by the municipal council of Kortemark. The area, measuring 2.80 hectares, is a marshy piece of land with forest, located at the foot of the southern slope of the Ruidenberg. On the Ferraris map, the area was still part of the Wijnendale forest. The area has always been a wet piece of land because water flows out from the Ruidenberg here. The first arm of the Kolvebeek springs from the northeast border of the area. The second arm springs from the small forest a bit further on. A large part of the land is marked as a nature reserve on the regional plan, the rest as an area of landscape value. Rows of pollard willows surround the area and give the landscape its typical appearance. The meadow is regularly grazed but not fertilized. This leads to soil impoverishment. As a result, the herbs have more opportunities to expand, and new species also have the chance to establish themselves. Butterbur, marsh marigold, ... can be found in the meadow.
