Albert Long Memorial

Albert Long comes from Roquevaire, in Provence. In 1939, when the rumors of war become louder, Albert Long is called up to join his contingent (the 5th RDP). In January 1940, he gets leave to marry Georgette Ravel and immediately afterwards goes off to war. His newlywed wife will never see him again... In May, the war hits our region hard. The Jemelle station is destroyed and the allied forces are called for help. France responds positively and Albert Long is among the troops moving to Belgium. On May 12th, he is stationed at the crossroads of Genimont to block the enemy from the important road to Beauraing and Givet. However, he is shot down and his body is quickly buried in a nearby field. No death certificate is even issued. This situation catches the attention of Victoir Dubois. He, who will later become the mayor of Lavaux, digs up the body, inventories the personal belongings, finds the identity tag, buys a coffin, and gives Albert Long a dignified resting place in the cemetery. After the war, Albert Long's remains are transferred to France. Thanks to the memorial cross that was placed on June 5, 2010, at the site of his death, this brave soldier will never be forgotten by the village he defended until his death.
