Olne originated in Rome…
We write 996 in Rome. Three men happen to meet and become good friends: the first is Notger (1st prince-bishop of Liège), the second is Henry II (Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire), and the third is named Adalbert, bishop of Prague.
After their stay in the eternal city, they each travel back to their own country…
But Adalbert is murdered on the way back!! When Notger hears of his friend's death, he decides to build a church for him.
That becomes the Saint Adalbert church in Liège, which has since disappeared, but the street where it stood still bears his name.
The Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire did the same in Aachen – it became a collegiate church, consecrated by Notger.
To provide the chapter of the collegiate church with sufficient income for its maintenance, the Emperor relinquished nearby lands, such as in present-day Olne. Therefore, the image of the bishop of Prague, patron saint of Czechs and Poles, adorns the seal of the municipality of Olne!
