Journey through the centuries
As a privileged location due to its topography, the site of the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers in Namur has been occupied since at least the Mesolithic period (around 7500 BC). The excavations conducted at Grognon in the 1990s have demonstrated the continuous occupation of this narrow promontory made of rock and sediments.
In February 1990, a campaign of preventive excavations began at the site of the Hospice Saint-Gilles, prior to its restoration and reaffectation.
As a result, the archaeological service of the Walloon Region's Ministry, in collaboration with the City and the Archaeological Museum, was able to successfully investigate the courtyard and the interior of this listed building.
