The Spy Cave is known as one of the sites where remains of the Neanderthal man have been found. The cave is located near Spy on a hillside on the left bank of the Orneau, a tributary of the Sambre, about 20 meters above water level. The cavity in the rock face formed naturally in the limestone mass approximately 330 million years ago (Viséan), when after the Ice Age the water still reached this height. The cave consists of a main chamber and smaller rooms to the right and above it. In front of the cave, there is a terrace and there are slope deposits caused by the removal of debris during excavations. The cave is accessed through a forest, which, due to the variety of the subsoil (limestone, sandstone, and slate), shows diverse vegetation, which in turn has led to a rich fauna. The Spy Cave and its surroundings were classified as a monument and site in 1981.
