The Castle
In 1613, Herman de Trappé, former mayor of Liège, established a steel site along the Rulles. He gave his name to the estate and the castle he built: the Trapperie.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, under the impetus of the Marchant family, the estate expanded. Added to this is the forge and furnace of Bologna located upstream of the Trapperie.
The prosperity of the forges will ensure the development and economic growth of Habay-la-vieille.
The factory closed in 1839. It was razed and the castle was renovated in 1871. At present,
the estate is owned by the family of the Prince de Mérode.
