Brussels

The urban area of Brussels consists of the metropolitan agglomeration and the surrounding hinterland that is spatially, socially, and economically oriented towards the capital. Within this area, apart from the administrative boundaries, the urban community forms a functional unit in terms of housing, working, trade, education, welfare, cultural experience, and recreation.
Adjacent to the historical city center — the Pentagon — densely populated urban neighborhoods such as Schaerbeek, Laeken, and Saint-Gilles emerged in the 19th century. Together they form the core city, which roughly corresponds to the Brussels-Capital Region. The urban residential core continues into the suburbs, which consist of old towns and villages that merged with the expanding city during the 20th century, such as Vilvoorde, Zaventem, Halle, and Waterloo. About 1.4 million people live in this morphological agglomeration. The outer zone of the city — the suburbs — has more dispersed housing and green spaces, and includes suburbs like Kortenberg, Asse, and Waver. The entire urban area has around 1.8 million inhabitants, making it the largest in the country.
